Benefits of Meditation

Meditation has been around for centuries but more recently the practice has become more common in western cultures for many great reasons. Incorporating a regular mindfulness practice into your life can provide so many benefits both physically, mentally, and emotionally. So you may be wondering what are some of these life changing benefits of mediation? We’re breaking down just a few of the science backed benefits (as there are truly so many) that we have experienced first hand.

Reduce stress and anxiety

Meditation can reduce stress and anxiety by lowering your cortisol levels. When the brain starts to wonder off into future thoughts and worries, this increases cortisol levels. Having a mindfulness practice helps to train the brain to come back to the present moment. When your thoughts are “here and now” versus “if and then” you give your mind and body permission to release those worries.

Enhances self-awareness

We are busy. Our minds are going a mile a minute and many of us are constantly doing for others. Meditating, even for just a few minutes a day provides your brain with a moment of stillness, of silence. This I have found to be so beneficial because it allows you to turn in and connect with yourself, your body, and your mind.

Increases focus and attention

If you have ever tried to meditate before you have probably found that the mind tends to wonder off. The Buddhists have a phrase for this wondering, jumping around mind — the monkey mind. The practice of mindfulness helps calm your mind by focusing on the present moment.

Improves your physical health

Some studies have shown that meditation can reduce chronic pain, lower cholesterol levels, may reduce blood pressure as well as symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. If you ask us, this might be one of the simplest remedies for improving your overall health.
